FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno Pacific Esports kicked off their fall 2026 season with placement tournaments for all titles and teams. Each team played two to three schools to determine divisional placements for the season. All teams had strong showings and played a total of 16 schools across the six FPU teams.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate: (2-1)
The Sunbirds are entering the season with a fresh and young roster with only two returning players from previous seasons. Led by freshman captain Flameboy (Victor Evrett), the 'Birds entered the arena with excitement and energy. Their first match against the Augustana University Vikings had a promising start with FPU's Ghostz (Armand Latortue) gaining the team an early lead. The Vikings responded with Justus on Yoshi and were able to tip the scales back in their favor, eliminating Ghostz and Dr.Cube (Cecilio Aguilar) before being stopped by Crayyg (Dylan Velvick). Crayyg held his own against the Viking's Sumovolt on Zelda and scouted out their captain Molecule's Rob. The captains faced off as the Sunbirds sent in Flameboy with both sides equal stocks remaining. Things were looking rough for the 'Birds as the Viking's Molecule took the first two stocks on Flameboy without a scratch, but Flameboy was not about to go down in his debut match without a fight. The room was quiet with anticipation as the team witnessed Flameboy execute a reverse sweep winning the first match 12-11!
The Sunbirds second match of the tournament was against CSU San Bernardino. The 'Yotes player Esomono on Dark Pit gave Fresno Pacific a rough time and swept through the first half of the lineup. Unable to recover, the 'Birds lost the match 6-12.
The third and final match for Fresno Pacific saw a rematch against Augustana. The Vikings threw out some new players and FPU had a rough start. Captain Flameboy came in third position to regain the lead and pass the final match off to Crayyg with a two-stock lead. Crayyg clutched the match winning 12-10 and finishing the night. The FPU Smash team placed in Division V and is looking forward to a great season.
Rocket League: Orange (2-0), Blue (0-2)
The FPU Blue team was off to a rocky start. An unfavorable start time led the team to train up their bench players before the match. DownTownBrown (Kyler Brown) and Lil Neptune (Jacob Sanchez) took a break from their regular Overwatch practice to do some cross-training for the team. In their first match against Mount Union University, the 'Birds eventually found a strategy that worked for them. Despite losing 0-3, they were scoring goals and challenging Mount Union. Their next match against Kennesaw State saw more success. DownTownBrown's demo strategy combined with JujuTheBeast's (Julian Bloemhof) great leadership brought each game within a goal. However, the Sunbirds lost in game five, winning two matches to Kennesaw's three. FPU Blue has placed in Division IX and is ready to work their way up.
FPU Orange had a different story. The team came in at their best and confident in their synergy. Smokie (Estevan Gonzalez) led the team in their first match against Colorado Mesa with five of FPU's nine goals and sweeping CMU three games to zero. Their second match of the night against University of New Mexico saw more of an even match but the Sunbirds once again came out on top, winning 3-1. Once again, FPU Orange placed in Division VI for the season and is looking to win conference.
Overwatch: Orange (1-2), Blue (1-2), Magenta (2-1)
FPU Esports has grown its rosters significantly this season. Overwatch is the game of choice with three teams this year! The arena was filled last Friday as all three teams had matches at the same time. Thanks to the diligent work of Fresno Pacific's Facilities team, the Sunbirds made it through the night without blowing a breaker. The nine matches of the night were all best of three games.
FPU Orange started off the night in a matchup against University of Southern California. The 'Birds quickly won the first game, were answered strongly by USC in the second, but clutched up the win in the third set to win the match! Match two for the Sunbirds was a complete reversal as the team was swept 0-2 by UC Santa Cruz. The brackets moved in such a way that the 'Birds got a rematch against USC for game three. Both teams were evenly matched, but after several hours of playing late in the night, USC withstanded the fatigue and won 2-1.
FPU Blue faced off against Champlain University in their first match. Despite losing 0-2, the teams were pretty equal on stats and the 'Birds contested well in both games. Fresno Pacific took what they learned into their next match against Missouri State and swiftly swept away the competition, winning 2-0. The Sunbirds saw a rematch with Champlain for game three, but the results went the same as game one, losing 0-2.
FPU Magenta saw its debut this week as FPU's All-Female Overwatch team. Led by captain Ryloren (Riley Kirk) the 'Birds faced off in their first match against College of Saint Benedict & Saint John's University. Despite being outranked, the Sunbirds put up a good fight, but lost 0-2. The next match against Minnesota State University was won by default as the team no-showed. It brought the FPU Magenta into the third and final game of the night against Murray State. The team entered the match hungry for a win! RedTheHuman (Audrey Troxel) led the team in KD ratio going 17/1 along with the rest of the team averaging 13 eliminations each. The Sunbirds swept MS 2-0 and ended the night with the best record of the three teams and high hopes for the season ahead!
