FRESNO, Calif. - Opening CCAA play, Fresno Pacific women's soccer battled to a 1-1 draw with Cal State San Marcos on Friday night at Ramirez Field. The 'Birds struck first before the Cougars answered in the second half.
Fresno Pacific broke through in the 20th minute when returning Sunbird
Gizelle Aguirre found the back of the net. Aguirre patiently waited in the box before receiving a perfectly placed pass from
Bailey Roberson. With the goalkeeper moving to make the play, Aguirre's shot trickled into the right side of the net to give the 'Birds a 1-0 advantage.
Cal State San Marcos continued to pressure the Fresno Pacific defense, generating multiple chances throughout the remainder of the half, but the 'Birds held firm to preserve their one-goal lead heading into halftime. The Cougars eventually found the equalizer ten minutes into the second half. Following a corner kick, CSUSM generated a series of chances inside the box, with multiple shots blocked before CSUSM's LaRocca found an opening and fired a shot into the right corner to make it 1-1.
Both teams continued to battle for the go-ahead goal, but neither side could break through. The Cougars appeared to find a late winner, but a challenge on the play overturned the last-minute goal, allowing Fresno Pacific to hold on for the draw. The result marks the first tie of the season for the 'Birds, while Cal State San Marcos records its fourth draw of the season.
