LONG BEACH, Calif. - The PacWest Conference unveiled its weekly women's and men's tennis honors Tuesday evening, and Fresno Pacific tennis left no doubt about who owned the week. In a commanding sweep, the Sunbirds claimed both Team of the Week honors, while
Yume Ueoku and
Jordi Gonzalez delivered standout individual performances to earn Player of the Week recognition, capping a dominant all-around showing for the program.
The women's tennis team, ranked 41st in the nation, went 4-0 on the week. The Lady 'Birds defeated three conference opponents over the course of four games. To kickstart the heavy week of play, the Sunbirds defeated Biola 5-2 on Tuesday, then overcame Westmont 4-0 on Wednesday, and faced their biggest challenge on Thursday. Menlo, ranked 32nd in the nation, put up a fight against the 'Birds, but was ultimately outscored by 5-2. Despite a long week, the Blue and Orange finished with an incredible 7-0 sweep over Cal State Los Angeles for their fifth consecutive win! The women's team is currently 9-4 overall and ranked fifth in the conference.
Ueoku continues to dominate this season, remaining undefeated in singles (13-0) and performing exceptionally in doubles play. A notable moment this week was when the team took down No. 32 Menlo, which was possible due to Ueoku's dominant performance against No. 70 Zofia Dziewiecka (6-2, 7-6). The junior from Fukuoka, Japan went 4-0 this week and earned the first national ranking of the season with doubles partner,
Fabiana Gonzalez. Together, they make a remarkable pair on court one—ranked 31st in the nation with a 12-1 overall record.
The Sunbird men also fared well with a 2-0 record on the week. The men's team took down No. 27 Biola in a close 4-3 match on Tuesday afternoon. The nationally ranked powerhouse hadn't lost a match in conference before coming face-to-face with the 'Birds! The men captured the doubles point and saw stellar performances across the board until Gonzalez clinched the match (6-4, 6-3) to deliver the biggest upset of the week. It became the theme of the week as the freshman standout also clinched the match against Menlo with a 6-1, 6-2 result, immensely contributing to the 5-2 win. The men's team is 3-5 overall, riding their two-win streak.
